Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation
The Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana is a centre of excellence dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and cure of blood disorders and blood cancers in both children and adults. Our philosophy is simple yet comprehensive—**from womb to wellness**—providing seamless care from prevention and early diagnosis to advanced therapies and long-term survivorship.
Established as the **first dedicated Clinical Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation Unit in Northern India**, the department has been at the forefront of several pioneering achievements. We performed the **first successful allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant in the state of Punjab** in a patient with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL). The department subsequently established one of the region's earliest programmes for **matched unrelated donor (MUD) transplantation**, pioneered stem cell transplantation for **thalassemia and primary immunodeficiency disorders**, including Wiskott–Aldrich syndrome, and performed the **first αβ T-cell-depleted haploidentical stem cell transplant in Punjab**.
Today, the department has successfully performed **more than 300 hematopoietic stem cell transplants** and offers the complete spectrum of transplantation services, including matched sibling donor, matched unrelated donor (MUD), haploidentical, and αβ T-cell-depleted haploidentical transplantation. Since 2015, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana has been a member in good standing of the **National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), USA**, reflecting our commitment to internationally accepted standards of transplant care and donor access.
Our expertise encompasses the full range of **benign hematological disorders**, including inherited and acquired anemias, aplastic anemia, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), hemolytic anemias, hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders, thrombosis, bone marrow failure syndromes, and disorders affecting red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and coagulation.
The department also provides comprehensive care for **hematological malignancies**, including acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and plasma cell disorders. Patients have access to advanced diagnostics, precision medicine, intensive chemotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and the latest innovations in cellular therapy. As part of our commitment to bringing cutting-edge treatment closer to patients, the department now offers **CAR T-cell therapy** for selected relapsed and refractory hematological malignancies.
Our **comprehensive thalassemia programme** truly reflects our vision of **"From Womb to Wellness."** We provide genetic counselling, carrier screening, prenatal diagnosis, newborn evaluation, lifelong transfusion and iron chelation services, management of complications, and curative stem cell transplantation—delivering continuity of care at every stage of life.
Beyond clinical care, the department is actively involved in research, clinical trials, medical education, and the training of future hematologists. We strive to integrate scientific excellence with compassionate, patient-centred care, ensuring that every individual receives the highest standards of treatment.
Guided by the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and sustained by our faith in God Almighty, we remain committed to delivering ethical, compassionate, and world-class hematology, hemato-oncology, cellular therapy, and stem cell transplantation services to patients from Punjab, across India, and beyond.
