CMC Ludhiana Performs First Alpha-Beta T-Cell Depleted Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant

The Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology & Bone Marrow (Stem Cell) Transplantation at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, has successfully performed its first Alpha-Beta (αβ) T-Cell Depleted Haploidentical Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT), making CMC Ludhiana the first centre in Punjab to offer this advanced transplant technique.

The procedure was carried out for a patient who required a stem cell transplant but did not have a fully matched sibling donor. A haploidentical (half-matched) transplant was successfully performed using stem cells donated by the patient's father. To minimize the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), the stem cell graft underwent Alpha-Beta T-cell depletion, a specialized processing technique performed in collaboration with Cytocare. Following transplantation, a CD45RO memory T-cell add-back was administered to enhance immune recovery while maintaining patient safety. The patient achieved successful engraftment and was discharged in stable condition.
